Libraries in Lucknow

Lucknow is a historical city. It basks in the glory of Nawabs, kebabs and parks. But if you are on a hunt for a reading space, neither of the above can satiate your nerd needs. Most Lucknowites do not know or do not care about these reading spaces. This is the reason why despite affordable membership and facilities libraries in Lucknow have faced neglect since time immemorial. Not wasting time further, I, a sincere denizen of Lucknow, introduce you to libraries, with a bleak wish that you will visit it. I made sure to track libraries area wise. We begin with Kaiserbagh, University road Archarya Narendra Dev Marg then straight to Hazratganj and then Gomtinagar

Also remember that each pg/ engg./management colleges, universities, private and govt. aided, and UP government institutions eg. High court/KGMU medical college/CDRI/NABARD etc. offices have their own libraries, which you can visit as per your needs.


Tagore library, University of Lucknow

Address-Lucknow University Main Building, University Road.
Rich in its heritage, Tagore Library is one of the oldest library of Lucknow. It has rich database of research and online journals which help Ph.D scholars collect primary sources for their thesis. 
It is a quiet place, surrounding by greenery and has a beautiful Gandhi park in front. It also has a ladies' common room.

Amir-ud-Daula Public library-

This is the oldest library of Lucknow established in 1882, and opened for students in 1887. A home for 2,00,000 Books, trust me you will not find a better peaceful place to study/read than this library. Apart from rare ancient cultural manuscripts, this library has best section for Hindi, English and Urdu literature. There is a separate space for reading newspaper and reading hall. It has good collection of Hindi journals, and the library staff is silently supportive. You can spend hours in this library, can have lunch in the garden, read, write and issue books.
There are two membership offers- annual and lifetime. 
Annual membership- is of 325/- and lifetime membership is 500/- only. You can issue two books at a time for 2 weeks i.e. 14 days.

Hindi Sansthan Lucknow

How to reach-an auto from Charbagh Railway station stops at Parivartan Chowk circle, then take a right pass by K.D Singh Babu Stadium. Just a block away, after a green parking zone, stands this office. Interesting point, it is opposite of DM's official bungalow.

It is hub of all Hindi literature enthusiasts, professors, and bureaucrats. You can find political writings, and Progressive Writers' collection. Every year Hindi Pakhwada is celebrated and renowned poets, professors, scholars and literature enthusiasts attend it.

Bhatkhande Music Institute, deemed University, Lucknow

How to reachan auto from Charbagh Railway station via Kaiserbagh Circle, drops you here just before Parivartan Chowk circle
This institution is Lucknow's musical heritage. It has a library which you can visit if you wish to read journals and books related to music, dance and instrumentals.

SNA Sangeet Natak Academy
Address- Opposite Fun Republic, near RBI, Lohia Path
As the word "Natak" drama suggests, SNA library has critical texts of famous Indian and regional plays in multiple languages, English, Hindi and Urdu etc.

BNA Bhartendu Natya Academy
AddressBharatendu Bhawan, Vikas Khand-1, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow
Devoted to the art of theatre and dance, the library has good collection of plays.
